It was lovely to see a recent write-up of Denstone College Cricket from The Forty Club—a wonderful reflection on the spirit, sportsmanship, and talent on display from our players. This is what they had to say:
SCHOOL REPORTS 2024
DENSTONE COLLEGE
THE FORTY CLUB TROPHY WINNERS 2024
After a couple of years of comfortable wins for The Forty Club, Denstone came back with a bang.
In one of the most stunning settings East Midlands district has the fortune to play at we were invited to bat but were soon in trouble with the ever reliable Braddock and overseas guest Morce back in the hutch early.
Impressive and lively opening spells from Westenberg and Longyear backed up by three wickets from Britton had us reeling at 119 for 5 with only perhaps Perkins (26) showing much resistance. However with Davies and Harland starting a post-lunch recovery with 51 and 31 respectively, and late runs from Shepherd and Hassan we were able to post a respectable 184 all out.
All 7 pupils bowled well, with Westerberg’s 2 for 42 and Britton’s 3 for 49 being the pick.
In their reply, the opening pair batted exceptionally: Dimberline’s 31 from just 18 balls and Tweddle’s 38 made for a brisk opening stand before Jackson removed them.
That saw the introduction of Hughes (43) and the mightily impressive Sophie Beech (34) both scoring at a run a ball, with 12 boundaries between them and all scored along the deck.
At 150 for 3, all appeared lost for XL. However the late introduction of the evergreen Hadley caused a partial collapse. He took 4 for 23, changing the score board to 175 for 6 and then 180 for 7.
The XL excitement was short-lived as a couple of lusty blows from the 8 and 9 batters got the College across the line.
The College had played a strong EM XI and they had shown true character together with some skilful and well thought-out batting.
Many thanks to the College for an excellent fixture, for some superb catering.
