Several Sixth Form Scholarships are available to exceptional candidates joining the College after GCSEs.

Sixth Form Scholarships

The Alastair Hignell Scholarship is open to outstanding academics (A* grades at GCSE), with national sporting potential and offers a Sixth Form boarding education. The scholarship is in honour of Alastair Hignell, Old Denstonian, who had a distinguished career in first class cricket, international rugby and latterly as a BBC commentator.

The Governors' Award is a means tested Sixth Form full boarding bursary. Applications are invited from high academic performers who can demonstrate excellence inside and outside the classroom, and who will make a significant contribution to school life. Applicants should be new to independent education.

The Swales Sixth Form Science Scholarship is intended for those planning to study A levels in the sciences: biology, physics and chemistry, (or at least biology and one other science), and who wish to study medicine, veterinary science or dentistry at university. It is open to internal and external candidates who have achieved mainly A* grades at GCSE. It is named for Michael Swales OD, who has a long association with Denstone.

The Lethbridge Sixth Form Music Scholarship will suit young people who have achieved grade eight standard in their specialist instrument, and who intend to study A Level Music, and indeed music at university or in a specialist conservatoire or college. It is open to internal and external candidates who have achieved mainly A* grades at GCSE. Lionel Lethbridge was Director of Music at Denstone for many years, and maintains a close association today.

Candidates for Sixth Form Academic Scholarships and Sixth Form All Round Scholarships are invited for two days of interviews, assessments and scholarship examinations. English, maths and two subjects of the candidate’s own choice from their proposed A level subjects will be examined. Candidates applying for the Swales Sixth Form Science Scholarship would be expected to take biology.

Sixth Form non-academic scholarships are also available to recognise exceptional ability in music, sport, drama, art or design technology and assessments take place at Denstone in November of the year before entry. Assessment includes interviews and examinations. In addition to non- academic assessment, English and maths will be examined.

Internal scholarships are available for Denstone College pupils entering the Third Form and the Lower Sixth Form. Pupils are assessed with the external candidates in January. Academic scholarship recognition will be awarded following the summer examinations. Candidates applying for Sixth Form Scholarships will be selected following the GCSE results. Please be aware that as with many of the best independent schools, the competition for awards is very high, and parents may be well advised to discuss with the school those scholarships for which they intend to apply. The Admissions team administers this process and will be pleased to discuss it with parents. Formal applications for consideration should be addressed to the Registrar, James Hartley.
