Sports at Denstone College
At Denstone, sport plays an integral role within College life, developing independent minded pupils that display resilience under pressure. Denstonians are developing a national reputation for sporting pedigree across the College’s major sports. We provide pupils the opportunity to achieve their potential whilst striving for an individual and collective level of excellence. Denstone have widened the provision on offer whilst providing unprecedented levels of success for our sports teams and highest performing individuals.
Our outstanding facilities include a state of the art Sports Hall, an indoor six lane swimming pool, a professional-standard nine-hole golf course, two Astroturf all weather pitches and an athletics track, as well as ten netball and sixteen tennis courts. Recent additions include the Adamson’s Sports Complex, a £2 million pound facility comprising changing rooms, social areas and further netball and tennis courts. There are players in performance pathways across the major sports in every age group with eight former pupils leaving to take up full time professional sports contracts in the last four years with five pupils gaining international recognition. The College have grown strong links with Leicester Tigers, Derbyshire and Warwickshire Cricket and Wasps Netball providing our pupils with the opportunity to further their sporting careers.
The main sports for girls are hockey and netball, with tennis and athletics in the summer, and the main sports for boys are rugby, hockey and cricket. These games are at the heart of our full programme of inter-school and inter-house competitions. A typical sports afternoon will see in the region of twenty highly competitive fixtures, and almost every pupil will represent the College on the sports field during their time here. On one afternoon last year, 35 inter school fixtures were played across five sports concurrently involving 64% of the College with 87.3% of our pupils playing in a fixture of some kind throughout the last academic year. This represents an increase over previous years.
The introduction of the Athletic Development Department with two full time members of staff, has not only focused on high performance but on fostering the well-being and welfare of our students. The implementation and development of the Dedicated Athlete Scheme (DAS), provides the most committed and able members of College with seminars in psychology, nutrition, performance analysis and athletic development as well as the formation of Individual Development Plans. The DAS is complemented by our provision for sports medicine including the introduction of a physiotherapist and delivering injury and concussion screening protocols. The College has also recently introduced specialist coaching in tennis, golf and triathlon.
Denstone has enjoyed a sustained period of success that has been supported by a philosophy of guided choice and late specialisation whilst fostering the psychological characteristics of developing excellence. Denstonians are participators not spectators and I would be delighted to further share our vision for sport.
