Sport at Denstone

Sport plays a major role in the school community, encouraging pupils of all abilities to get involved and enjoy the wide variety of sports on offer: Denstonians are participators not spectators. Competitions are organised at School and also at House level across the age groups. Denstone promotes team spirit and sport assists in the development of social and personal qualities that creates successful team players.

We are well equipped for sport at Denstone and the school has an ongoing programme of facility development. Our sports hall comprises a weights room and cardiovascular section. The playing fields cover 50 acres and include a 9 hole golf course. We have two Astroturf surfaces, one of which accommodates ten tennis courts in the summer. In addition, there are five hard netball courts, squash courts, fives courts as well as indoor and outdoor shooting ranges.

The major sports on offer for the boys are rugby, hockey and cricket. The girls play hockey in the Michaelmas term and netball in the Lent. In the Summer, rounders is played by the juniors, whilst the older girls’ major Summer sports are tennis and athletics. A variety of sports are available for those pupils who wish to choose an alternative including: football, athletics, swimming, cross-country, golf, weight training, seven’s rugby, aerobics, shooting, badminton, life-saving and basketball.

Denstone is proud that many of our pupils are chosen to represent external clubs, counties and country at sports.  Teams that have benefited from our pupils' expertise are - England Rounders, U18 England Rugby, R.F.U. Staffordshire School of Rugby, Staffordshire Rugby and Leicester Tigers, West Midlands Hockey, Staffordshire Hockey, Staffordshire Netball, and Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire at Cricket, and Aneesh Kapil England Under 18 Cricket.
