Denstone has a fine tradition of sporting excellence in both girls' and boys' games, achieved through excellent coaching, high standard facilities and sufficient time in the curriculum. Many pupils represent themselves and the College at regional and national level.  Some then go on to play professional sport.

Sports & Athletics Scholarships

The major sports at Denstone are rugby, hockey and cricket for boys, and hockey, netball and tennis for girls. Candidates who excel in one or more of our major sports are invited to apply for a scholarship. Assessments will take place at the College in January for First (11+) and Third Form (13+) entry or possibly during a school match or training session for Sixth Form scholarship candidates. Applicants are expected to have the potential to play at regional level and above, and will have regularly represented their school at first team level. They will also be expected to supply details of achievements and a written statement of their commitment to a rigorous training programme.

Facilities at the College are as you would expect for one of the best independent schools in Staffordshire or Derbyshire. There is a larger than average Sports Hall and swimming pool. Our playing fields can accommodate 10 rugby pitches, two astroturf pitches and four cricket pitches. Netball courts, indoor and outdoor, tennis courts and athletics facilities are plentiful and the College boasts an EGU affiliated Golf Course and driving range, a CV gym, a performance gym with a full time Strength and Conditioning Coach, and Fives Courts.

Sports Scholars at the College usually play in the A teams in two of the three major sports and they must maintain a level of sporting achievement commensurate with their ability. They should have the requisite character traits to take on the role of a sports scholar, and be absolutely committed to excellence in sport. In return they can usually expect:
A pathway to elite level sport
Holistic coaching
Individualised elite athlete development programmes

Sports Scholarships normally carry a remission on fees of up to 20% but all scholarships can be augmented by bursaries where there is a need.
