Sixth Form Opportunities at Denstone College
Denstone College offers a first class rounded education. It is situated midway between Ashbourne and Uttoxeter in a stunning site of 100 acres, with fine sporting and extra curricular facilities. Academic achievement is excellent with pupils leaving Denstone for the very best universities, reading a wide range of subjects.
At Denstone College we encourage our students to aim high – in the classroom, on the sports field and in everything they do. In this way, we aim to give every pupil the skills they need to excel in today’s competitive world.
Denstone College proudly boasts several rugby ex-internationals among the school’s Old Boys and has an enviable reputation across a wide spectrum of sports including cricket, hockey, swimming and golf. This year Jordan Davies, who has played against Scotland, Ireland and Italy for the England U18 AER side, and who left Denstone College in Summer 2008, has signed a 2 year contract with the Sale Sharks. College pupils regularly achieve county and midlands recognition in all the major team sports, but there is also room for individual sports. Francesca Allen, Denstone College 5th Form student, has become the British under 16 National Archery Champion and is now looking ahead to the 2012 Olympics.
The Alastair Hignell Scholarship
This is an award open to academic boys and girls with national sporting potential for a sixth form boarding education at Denstone College. It is in honour of Alastair Hignell, Old Denstonian, who achieved a distinguished career in first class cricket, international rugby, and latterly as a BBC commentator.
Applications are invited from exceptional and motivated young people who are expected to achieve the very best grades at GCSE and who have regional or national recognition for sport.
Governors’Awards at Denstone College
The governors of Denstone College are delighted to announce the endowment of two means-tested sixth form bursaries, each worth up to 100% of the boarding fees at Denstone College. The College invites applications from top academic performers who can demonstrate excellence inside and outside the classroom, and who will contribute fully to school life.
Applicants will be required to attend a two day assessment board, and must come to the College from a non-independent educational background.
Sixth Form Scholarships
Scholarships into the Sixth form worth up to 50% of the fees are available for high-performing academics and those with particular talent in Drama, Music, DT, Art or PE.

Entrance Examinations for the above scholarships and awards will be sat in open competition at Denstone College over 2 days. Candidates for the Alastair Hignell Sports Scholarship and the Governors’ Award would be expected to board.
Candidates will be examined in Maths and English Literature and will be able to select a further 2 exams which should be in subjects that they are hoping to study in the Sixth Form.
Non Academic assessments in Art, Drama, DT, Music and PE will also take place during this period. Candidates will be interviewed and references requested.
